About / Contact
SORIKA is an evolving project and idea that thus far has involved the making and publishing of books, art works, t-shirts and editions, the curation of art exhibitions, the hosting of discussions, book launches and parties, the participation in various fairs, and although originally conceived as a way to initiate collaboration with others it since accepted commissions in regard to art direction, design and film-making. It was established by Gareth McConnell in 2013.
SORIKA was initiated with no particular manifesto other than the realising of projects of interest and never dedicated to any specific medium or genre. Since its inaugural publication, the novella ‘Horse Latitudes’ by Chris Wilson these projects have included a reworking of the seminal 1980s photo-book ‘Looking for Love’ by Tom Wood, ‘A New Concise Reference Dictionary’ by the artist and writer Neal Brown, the curation and publication of ‘Smiler’, produced in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and a number of McConnell’s own art works including the publications ‘Sex, Drugs & Magick books I & II’ and ‘Close Your Eyes’.
Contributors have included cult writer Niall Griffiths, writer and critic Prof David Chandler, critic and broadcaster Matthew Collings and author of what has come to be accepted as the definitive text on ecstasy and acid house, Matthew Collin.
Most recently SORIKA / Gareth McConnell was commissioned by cult record label ‘Kill the DJ’ to create and design all products related to the forthcoming album release by ‘It’s a Fine Line’. This includes McConnell’s debut you as a video director on the single ‘The Delivery featuring Alex Kapranos’.
A number of SORIKA publications have been included on ‘best of year’ lists, most notably ‘Close Your Eyes’ (The New York Times Magazine & American Suburb X) and ‘Looking for Looking for Love’ (The Observer and Photo-Eye). Its works are held in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and the Royal College of Art.
The book Horse Latitudes and the limited edition print St Genet both by Chris Wilson were SORIKA’s inaugural releases.
